Composting Makeover

TCX compost 01

The program crew and I are very excited to be re-introducing composting as part of our educational program. Composting has been a necessity for us since we began in 2006. During that first summer for TCX, Kristie Singer (one of our first year seasonal staff members)  pioneered our program at Whites Landing.

Jeremy Plummer has been shepherding our system ever since then. Our composting handles all of our food scraps and other organic material (such as bison surprises!) 2009 saw some innovations by Michelle Krause (with the help of Grant and Jeremy) that really made a difference, including the addition of heap composting. (We had previously used mostly bin composting with some experimentation with vermicomposting.)

We are currently landscaping the original compost location for the purpose of conducting composting workshops for our campers. These workshops will explore the science behind composting and teach the standard composting methods, several of which can be utilized at their homes and schools. The master plan even includes developing an on-site garden where we’ll cultivate vegetables for demonstration purposes and native island plants for botany and island ecology lessons.

Naturally, we’ll keep you updated here with our progress.

Photos from White’s Landing in the winter time

We have been lucky from all the rain to experience a bright green landscape and a running stream here at White’s.  The campsite looks beautiful with all the fresh grass, and the stream runs all the way down to the beach.  A couple of bison who have been roaming around lately seem to love it all, too.
